Driving Roundabouts
I went out on the road today with two instructors. The first instructor today was the one I had on my first road drive. We drove the same route: city streets to a truck stop and back. While at the truck stop we washed the windshield on the truck.
Another instructor took me out because I need experience driving in a roundabout. There is a roundabout on the CDL driving test. The key to a roundabout is to drive slow and keep to the outside of the circle. This increases your chances of keeping the trailer tires off the inside curb. This instructor told me that he has hauled steel for 20 years. He often drives to the Indianapolis area and knows all my neighboring towns off I-65.
The rest of the day was spent practicing the parallel parking maneuver. They filled in all the holes in the yard while I was out driving. Today went much better than yesterday. I felt I had better control of the trailer. I set up for the maneuver well. If I made a mistake I was able to more quickly correct it.
Iām curious if the day was better because it was a morning shift vs. afternoon, or because it was my second consecutive day. Maybe taking a week off between driving is hindering my progress?
